چکیده

hough Holmes was not writing for a digital age and certainly not for an era of digital rights management (DRM), his remarks may hold some interesting insights for solving the DRM enigma. This article is about the similarities and differences that exist between law and engineering. It is about the nature and value of interdisciplinary research and the importance this approach will have in dealing with the problems associated with media piracy and unauthorized use of digital information. The chief aim of this article is to explore legal reasoning as it applies to technological protection measures (TPMs). We do this through consideration of the content scramble system (CSS) litigation in the United States under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) [27]. The DMCA poses challenging questions for lawyers and technologists. By analyzing this law and its interpretation by U.S. courts, we identify some emerging trends in IP law generally and suggest implications for DRM research. Although the DMCA is of greater application in the United States, we believe that this legislation is a response (in part) to intellectual property (IP) obligations at the international level. Similar legal movements in other jurisdictions have been initiated or are expected. Since the enforcement of intellectual property takes place at the national level, we focus on this particular jurisdiction in order to gain more understanding of DRM as it pertains to law. Specifically, we discuss: Rajen Akalu and Deepa Kundur

dsp tips & tricks - Direct digital synthesis: a tool for periodic wave generation (part 2) - Signal Processing Magazine, IEEE

110 SEPTEMBER 2004 n Part 1 of this article (in the July 2004 issue of IEEE Signal Processing Magazine), we presented an overview of the basics of direct digital frequency synthesis (DDS), simple formulas to compute bounds of the signal characteristics, and a scheme to improve the DDS spurious free dynamic range (SFDR). In this Part 2, we discuss additional tricks used to optimize DDS performan...

Workshop Report/IEEE ComSoc Women's Workshop on Communications and Signal Processing

Women are underrepresented in Electrical Engineering at all levels. This fact has been documented in several places including [1, 2]. In particular, women are underrepresened at the tenured and full professor level in engineering [3]. This is also true for the subfields of Communications and Signal Processing where women make up slightly less than 7.5 % of the total membership. However, of the ...

Turbo equalization - Signal Processing Magazine, IEEE

apitalizing on the tremendous per formance gains of turbo codes and the turbo decoding algorithm, turbo equalization is an iterative equalization and decoding technique that can achieve equally impressive performance gains for communication systems that send digital data over channels that require equalization, i.e., those that suffer from intersymbol interference (ISI). In this article, we dis...

Genomic signal processing: diagnosis and therapy - life Sciences - Signal Processing Magazine, IEEE

IEEE SIGNAL PROCESSING MAGAZINE [107] JANUARY 2005 G enomics entails the study of large sets of genes with the goal of understanding collective gene function, rather than just that of individual genes. Genomic signal processing (GSP) is the engineering discipline that studies the processing of genomic signals. Since regulatory decisions within the cell utilize numerous inputs, analytical tools ...
